Carnival of Masks presents Icelandic crochet costume designer, Jessica Chambers as part of our Beyond the Carnival: Interviews with Costume Folks Around the World series.

CoM: Jessica, tell us about what you do.

JC: I make cosplays entirely out of crochet.

CoM: What inspires you?

JC: Most often my designs are inspired by Disney characters like Anna from Frozen. I really love Nordic designs, like embroidery and rosemaling motif. I am also very inspired by the history and the beauty of the place I live, and I try to honour it when I can.

CoM: How did your life in costumes begin??

JC: It started incredibly randomly. I was crocheting a mermaid tail blanket for a friend, and realised I could modify it into a mermaid costume.

CoM: Which costumed events do you make sure to never miss and why?

JC: I always attend Heimar og Himingeimar in Hafnarfjordur, Iceland.

CoM: What's your favorite thing about costumes?

JC: Costumes give an excuse to play with detail and textures and designs in a way you just can't in everyday clothing. It's an outlet for all the big dreams a designer has.

CoM: Do you have a costume related business?

JC: Yes, I write crochet patterns for the pieces I create and sell them online at Transatlantic Crochet.

CoM: Who do you want to shoutout in the costume world?

JC: I love Stitched in Starlight cosplay, she is another crochet cosplayer and her designs are amazing.

CoM: Thanks so much, Jessica!
