What is Carnival of Masks?

Carnival of Masks is a documentary about mask makers and costume designers keeping alive Venice, Italy’s ancient Carnevale traditions. We also have a thriving Facebook group, two online spotlight series, a newsletter, event planner, Carnevale calendar, growing database of costume people around the world, and social media pages. Carnival of Masks chronicles costumed event culture around the globe through film, interviews, event coverage, and more. Uniting scenes. Sharing resources. Uplifting and holding space for a unique international community overflowing with whimsy, talent, magic, creativity, and heart.

CHARISE SOWELLS, Director/Producer: Award-winning writer, musician, and filmmaker. Grew up sewing with her grandma and great grandma, watching horror movies with her dad, belly dancing with her mom, and dreaming of being as ethereal as Enya. Former Deli Magazine Editor and Event Planner. Exhibited photographer. Produced and published playwright. Scriptwriter and songwriter for TV shows on Netflix, BBC, and Nickelodeon. Creative Consultant for everyone from Walt Disney Imagineering to indie studios and first time creators. Grammy voter. ASCAP artist and music publisher. NYU Tisch alum. Passionate about using her talents for good and always happy to find any excuse to dress up!

EVAN MALOUF, Producer: Award-winning actor and filmmaker from his work on Sun Tea with Charise Sowells. Indie rock singer-songwriter shaped by 90’s grunge music and Built to Spill. Toured the U.S. in a band. Played shows abroad. Recorded and released albums. Has a sales and finance background with an economics degree and several years in management. Big fan of skulls and skeletons!

MIA MORAVIS, Producer: Charter National Member of The Television Academy/National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmy Awards®), and a three-time Emmy® Nominee (Festival America Series~PBS). She is Producer, EP, and AP of Multiple GRAMMY®-nominated and -winning albums, a Voting Member of The Recording Academy® (GRAMMYS®), and a Member of its Producers & Engineers and Songwriters & Composers Wings, also serving on its Musical Theater Task Force. Mia is a Remi®-winning Filmmaker (Gold Special Jury Prize-Documentary for Seeking Heat [David Byrne]), and Producer of Sweet Harmony: The Manhattan Transfer Story (in production), directed by Oscar® Nominee, Miles Mogulescu. She is a Tony®-nominated Producer, and a 28-time ASCAP PLUS Award Winner (Composing/Songwriting), and has served as Producer for iHeartRadio’s iRead2Know/iHeartFamily. Mia is a Producer of multiple audiobooks, cinematic audio, and audio theatre (Audible), and is, herself, an award-winning actor, and voice actor.
